Summer Reading Challenge
The Summer Reading Challenge takes place over the summer holidays throughout the UK. Run by national charity The Reading Agency, and delivered with the support of the UK public library network, it is the UK’s biggest free reading promotion for primary-aged children.
The Challenge reaches over 700,000 families each year, motivates children to keep reading during the summer holidays, and helps them to maintain their reading skills and confidence.
Each year the Summer Reading Challenge has a new theme. For 2024, The Reading Agency has teamed up with Create, a leading charity bringing the creative arts to those who need it most, to create ‘Marvellous Makers’, a challenge all about creativity.
From dance to drawing, junk modelling to music, Marvellous Makers has something for everyone!
Children taking part in the Challenge will meet the Marvellous Makers, a creative club who are making amazing things for a (fictional) festival at their local library. They will discover that Tails (a cheeky squirrel) has been spotted at the creative club recently, and some objects have mysteriously gone missing from the club’s creative toolbox…
Visit your local library
All children need to do is read 6 books over the summer holidays. They can either visit their local library where there is a wide selection of books for them to choose from or register online and read books that they have at home or any of our children’s e-books.
Those who complete the challenge will receive a medal and certificate, a free family swim voucher and gain entry into a prize draw.

Powys Library Service will be encouraging families to read together for fun over the Summer holidays. We will have activities on our Children’s Facebook page throughout the holidays, as well as events in some of our libraries.
